Brits traveling to the EU must now adhere to stricter passport validity rules following Brexit. Previously, travelers could renew their passports nine months early and carry over the remaining time, effectively extending validity beyond 10 years. However, since the UK’s departure from the EU on January 31, 2020, this rollover is no longer recognized. The change reflects the UK’s status as a ‘third country’, aligning it with non-EU nations in terms of travel documentation.
Passports must now be valid for 10 years from the issue date, with any additional time disregarded for EU travel. Additionally, the EU requires passports to remain valid for the entire stay plus at least 3 months. This means a 10-year passport cannot be used for travel into the Schengen area after nine years and nine months.
Some travelers have faced harsh consequences, being turned away at the gate despite believing their passports were valid. These incidents have resulted in financial losses for which travel insurance does not compensate. The prevailing stance is that passengers are responsible for ensuring their travel documents meet all requirements.
Other popular destinations have their own rules. Countries like the Maldives, Dubai, Turkey, and Israel require passports to be valid for six months from arrival. India mandates 180 days of validity and two blank pages for visas, a rule also enforced by South Africa, Kenya, and Madagascar. Notably, Costa Rica requires only one day’s validity from departure. These varying requirements highlight the importance of checking specific rules for each destination, as they can differ significantly even among popular travel spots.
For those planning travel, the Foreign Office provides detailed entry requirements for each country. Renewing a passport online costs £102 and typically takes three weeks. A fast-track service is available for £90 extra with a personal appointment, while a one-day renewal for adults costs an additional £137.50.
