UK Austen filming sites now open for bookings

The 2026 Sense and Sensibility adaptation has created fresh incentives for Austen enthusiasts to explore the UK. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles lead Georgia Oakley’s version, which begins with the Dashwood sisters’ hardships at Norland Park, a fictional Sussex estate. Producers selected Kingston Russell House, a 17th-century Dorset manor near the Jurassic Coast, for filming. Though privately owned, the south guest wing—comprising two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and six acres of formal gardens—is now bookable through Airbnb. The space retains original William Morris wallpaper and a wood-burning fireplace.

The film also returns to Barton Cottage, the sisters’ modest new residence. In Ang Lee’s 1995 Oscar-winning adaptation, scenes here were shot at Efford House, part of the Flete Estate in Devon. The 5,000-acre property includes woodlands, beaches, and the newly inaugurated King Charles III England Coast Path. Guests can stay in holiday cottages, including Efford House itself, which accommodates 13 people and permits dogs.

Those seeking a more rugged Austen-inspired stay can visit Blackpool Mill Cottage, used in the 2008 BBC miniseries. This 15th-century North Devon cottage sits along the Atlantic coast, offering tide pools and surfing within 75 yards. The drawback? It lies 60 miles from Efford House by car—or a three-week, 300-mile coastal trek.

Austen’s film locations now bookable as stays

Jane Austen’s film adaptations have transformed historic UK properties into overnight attractions. Fans can now book stays at filming locations, from grand estates to shepherd’s huts. Options include private rentals and National Trust properties, each offering a slice of Austen’s settings.

Stourhead in Wiltshire served as the backdrop for the 2005 Pride and Prejudice proposal scene. The Temple of Apollo, a neoclassical gazebo, appears in the film as Darcy’s proposal site. Nearby, 89 Church Lawn, a National Trust stone cottage, sleeps seven and overlooks the estate’s lake and gardens.

Chatsworth House in Derbyshire stood in for Pemberley in the same film. While the main house isn’t available for stays, Chatsworth Escapes offers shepherd’s huts, a 1580s Hunting Tower, and rental cottages across the 1,000-acre estate. A Darcy bust from the movie is now sold in the Orangery shop.

Lyme Park in Cheshire provided Pemberley exteriors for the 1995 miniseries, including the scene where Colin Firth’s Darcy swims shirtless. Visitors can explore the deer park, gardens, and Edwardian cottages, Lyme East Lodge and Lyme West Lodge, both dog-friendly and accommodating four guests. Swimming in Darcy’s pond remains off-limits.

Mansfield Park’s hidden gems for Austen fans

Mansfield Park adaptations offer fewer film locations, but two key sites remain accessible. The 1999 version used Kirby Hall in Northamptonshire, where Peacock Cottage, built in the 1970s, sleeps four and provides access to the estate’s ruins and restored gardens. For the 2007 TV adaptation, Newby Hall in North Yorkshire stood in for Mansfield Park. Guests can stay in three restored 18th-century cottages, complete with log burners and fresh eggs from the estate’s farm.

Firle Place in East Sussex served as Hartfield in the 2020 Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy. The 500-year-old manor, featuring Van Dyck paintings and Sèvres porcelain, can be rented for events. More modest options include Shepherd’s Cottage (on Airbnb) and Woodfire at Chapel Field, a gastro-camping site with open-fire meals.

The 2007 Northanger Abbey adaptation filmed at Lismore Castle in Ireland. The 15-bedroom castle, with its Old Master paintings and grand staircases, is available for private rentals. Nearby, Ballyrafter B&B offers a quieter stay on a 15-acre farm.

The 2022 Persuasion featured Trafalgar Park in Wiltshire as Kellynch Hall. Three holiday cottages, sleeping four, five, and eight, are available on the estate, surrounded by a walled cut flower garden. For Uppercross House, Brympton House in Somerset accommodates up to 80 guests and is available for weddings and large events.

2026 adaptation adds London and wild Devon

The 2026 Sense and Sensibility also includes scenes filmed at the National Gallery in London, where the Dashwood sisters attend a ball. The grand neoclassical space, with its towering columns and marble floors, doubles as the assembly rooms where Marianne’s passionate nature draws attention. Nearby, Dartmoor National Park in Devon serves as the backdrop for the sisters’ countryside walks, with its rugged moors and granite tors standing in for Devon’s wild terrain.

For a deeper Austen immersion, Hartland Abbey in North Devon, home to Blackpool Mill Cottage, offers additional attractions. The 12th-century abbey ruins sit beside the cottage, providing a glimpse into medieval history. The estate’s Hartland Point features coastal cliffs and an 1872 lighthouse, while Hartland Quay remains a working harbor where fishing boats unload daily. The area’s maritime charm extends to its authentic coastal atmosphere.

In Dorset, where Kingston Russell House was filmed, the Jurassic Coast extends beyond the estate. Nearby Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door offer dramatic chalk cliffs and swimming spots. The Cerne Giant, a prehistoric hill figure, lies nearby, adding local intrigue.
