About the area around Mevagissey, Cornwall
We have just returned from a fantastic mid-October break to Mevagissey.
If you hit the weather right this can be a wonderful time to be in Cornwall with mild temperatures, crowd-free beaches and towns and that special Cornish magic.
Although our drive to Cornwall started off looking like this.
The second day was more mild and with no rain and the third day sunny and warm.
It was the perfect weekend away and reminded me why I love Cornwall in October.
We spent much of our time visiting local beaches so I thought I would do a round-up of our favorite beaches around Mevagissey.
Porthpean Beach
This is a lovely sand and shingle beach between Mevagissey and Charlestown and very close to St Austell.
In summer it would be perfect for swimming and in all seasons it’s great for rock pooling.
It’s a lovely cove and ideal for a bit of shell hunting too.
When we visited it was the day after a big storm which had washed lots of seaweed and other debris onto the beach so we felt like proper beachcombers.
Pentewan Beach
This wasn’t a beach we stopped at as it is mostly in front of Pentewan Caravan Park and we were on the lookout for more remote places with hardly anyone around.
But this is a sandy beach, really close to Mevagissey and half a mile long.
If you like to have amenities close to the beaches you visit then this could be a great one for you. With lots of activities available, restaurants and facilities.
Gorran Haven Beach – one of the best beaches around Mevagissey
I think this has to be our favorite beach in this area. We spent a whole sunny October morning here with our children.
They were running in and out of the sea shrieking at the cold chill of the water, sand castle building and shell hunting.
This is a great beach and really close to the lovely village of Gorran Haven. Which is perfect for picking up pasties, beach balls and buckets & spades.
There’s a pub for lunch and you can pay to have a go at kayaking in the summer. We loved it here.
Hemmick Beach – one of the beaches around Mevagissey, Cornwall
We didn’t make it to Hemmick Beach this time but a local told us it’s a great spot for getting away from the crowds.
You have to wind your way down the lanes to get there and it’s just west of Gorran Haven so is top of our list for our return trip to the area.
Portmellon Beach
This is such a sweet little beach and ideal for a spot of impromptu sandcastle building.
Just watch the time you visit as the tide completely swallows the beach at certain times of the day. Don’t panic, you can’t get cut off but you might have to make a retreat up onto the slipway.
Top tips for visiting the beaches around Mevagissey, Cornwall, England
It is worth noting that there isn’t a Mevagissey beach. It’s got a harbor there rather than a sandy stretch. Of course there are plenty of other beaches near Mevagissey that are beautiful and perfect to visit with kids, or without. As shown above.
Have you been to Mevagissey and the surrounding area? Which is your favorite beach?
