Google has acquired the data assets of defunct Spirit Airlines for $10 million, outbidding an AI-training firm in a court-supervised liquidation process. The search giant agreed to pay $10 million for emails, chat logs, and records from Spirit’s finance, operations, and loyalty programs, according to an Aug. 14 filing. The deal excludes customer personal information and credit card details. A Google spokesman stated that any data received will be scrubbed of personally identifiable information by a third party before delivery, intended for use in improving Google’s products and AI models. The transaction highlights the intense value placed on historical travel data even as airlines close their doors.

Tech-driven security upgrades at Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is rolling out a major security overhaul involving 17 government-approved measures. Six of these measures take effect immediately, including risk-based screening for high-risk passengers and crew. Staff vetting and access controls are also being tightened, alongside expanded pre-employment and random drug screening. The airport will see a larger Royal Malaysia Police presence across both terminals and enhanced intelligence sharing via the National Immigration Command Centre. A new technical committee from the Home Ministry and Transport Ministry will coordinate the rollout. Remaining measures will follow in phases, focusing on technology, assets, and human resources, with longer-term plans covering broader system transformation and potential expansion to other Malaysian airports.

The rapid deployment of these security protocols shifts the airport’s focus toward predictive risk management. Rather than relying on static checks for every passenger, the system now attempts to identify threats based on behavioral profiles and historical data. This approach requires continuous data integration between immigration, police, and airport operations. While the immediate measures target staff vetting and high-risk screening, the longer-term goals involve a complete overhaul of information sharing governance. If successful, this model could influence security standards across Southeast Asia, moving the region away from blanket security checks toward more targeted, intelligence-led approaches that adapt to evolving threats.

Spotnana deepens integration with Singapore Airlines

Travel tech platform Spotnana has launched a direct integration with Singapore Airlines, giving customers and partners full access to content across the airline’s network. The partnership, which connects with Singapore Airlines’ extensive route map of over 120 destinations, allows for complete servicing capabilities throughout the trip lifecycle. Users can access NDC fares that average 7% lower than older EDIFACT rates, with room for further savings through dynamic pricing. The platform removes distribution surcharges and makes corporate negotiated fares visible. Loyalty status is recognized during booking, including for seat selection, and users can hold tickets for up to 24 hours.

The ability to self-service exchanges, cancellations, and upgrades without agent involvement simplifies the travel experience for corporate clients. This functionality is available to both direct travelers and travel agents through Spotnana’s unified interface. By cutting out intermediaries and leveraging direct NDC connections, the platform aims to reduce friction in the booking process while maintaining competitive pricing structures. Travelers gain more control over their itineraries, and agencies benefit from the transparent visibility into fare classes and loyalty benefits that were previously hidden in opaque booking systems.

Atlas Flight Booking goes open source for AI agents

Atlas, a travel-tech company linking low-cost carriers with travel sellers, released an open-source skill on Aug. 18, 2026, allowing AI agents to perform flight searches and bookings. The tool, available under the Apache 2.0 license on GitHub and PyPi, enables agents to verify fares and create bookings via a single command. Rather than full automation, the system requires human approval at four checkpoints: authorizing the booking, accepting price changes, choosing a fallback seat, and confirming payment. CEO Mary Li noted that the initial release covers search, pricing, availability, and booking creation, with refunds and credit-card payments planned for future updates.
