New trends emerge in outdoor adventures

Adventure travel has entered a new era of customization, with travelers seeking physical skill-building, hyper-immersive local cultures, and eco-conscious escapes. The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) reports that demand for customized, soft-adventure itineraries is soaring.

One trend is “Coolcations” and high-latitude escapes, where travelers opt for crisp mountain air and temperate climates over hot beaches. Destinations like Alaska, Ecuador’s Galápagos highlands, and Big Sky, Montana, are popular for their cool weather and natural scenery.

Another trend is multi-modal “slow travel,” which combines activities like cycling, hiking, and cruising. Companies like Boat Bike Tours and French Waterways offer cruise-and-cycle journeys, while Eurohike caters to self-guided trekkers who want their luggage transferred between accommodations.

Travelers are also seeking hands-on, high-energy activities, such as paddling through river rapids or technical backcountry mountain biking. This approach allows visitors to return home with a new skill or a sense of accomplishment.

Some travelers are opting for “lore chasing,” seeking out remote corners of the planet that feel untouched by the modern internet. Eco-lodges like Sacha Lodge in the Ecuadorian Amazon offer wilderness immersion and unique experiences like night-kayaking through blackwater lagoons.

Heritage ranch travel is also gaining popularity, driven by a desire for digital detoxes and a fascination with cowboy culture. Properties like those under the True Ranch Collection umbrella allow guests to step back in time on historic dude ranches across the American West.

Here are five travel trends taking over the outdoors right now:
1. “Coolcations” & High-Latitude Escapes
2. Multi-Modal “Slow Travel” (Bike, Boat, & Hike)
3. Hands-on, high-energy activities
4. Raw “Lore Chasing” & Deep Amazonian Isolation
5. Heritage Re-Wilding & “Cowboy Core”
