This incredibly powerful show takes Dylan’s words and music and sets them against a backdrop of 1930’s America. Where families stand on the brink of poverty and destitution.
Despite the flaws of their lives, the Girl from the North Country weaves Dylan’s songs into a landscape peppered with hope and love amongst families.
Never has a show felt more like it resonates with its audience.
Girl from the North Country is a multi award-winning West End and Broadway musical. And this first UK tour brings all of the power and intensity of the production to the Theater Royal Bath.
Written by celebrated playwright Conor McPherson, the story focuses on the lives of the people thrown together at a 1930s guesthouse, facing foreclosure in the heart of America.
One by one we discover the truth of each of the stories of the guests who are each perilously on the brink, desperately seeking a brighter future.
Throughout the show the songs of Dylan are woven into the narrative. Bringing the best from the outstanding ensemble cast.
This production is a long way from a traditional jukebox musical, with the power of Dylan’s words and melodies complementing and developing the scenes.
There are many Dylan songs which are instantly familiar. But plenty in the production which will be new to many audiences, crowd-pleasing selected for their ability to add to the story rather than being crowd pleasing hits-by-numbers.
This is a tough and uncompromising musical which doesn’t shy away from the challenges of the period in which it is set. And the themes of the Great Depression resonate strongly still, with the audience at the Theater Royal Bath giving the production a standing ovation.
Standouts from the cast are Frances McNamee as Elizabeth Laine, Justina Kehinde as Marianne and Joshua C Jackson as Joe Scott who leads an incredible rendition of Slow Train.
This is a production which delivers a powerful and moving message thanks to the clever weaving of Dylan’s songs with a story which packs a punch.
The cast and musicians create something truly magical in this new touring production of Girl from the North Country which is at Theater Royal Bath until 8th of October before continuing around the UK.
